Is it legal to take rocks from the desert? - amethyst geodes for sale in toronto

We live near the desert, and there are some cool geodes and wondered if I could find. There are valuable if they crystals, citrine or amethyst are full of unusual or something of that value.

It is perfectly legal as long as one of the following exceptions:

1. is privately
2. Area is protected (national park or sanctuary status for wildlife, for example)
3. This jeopardize protected species or alter the ecosystem (which is a stretch, so do not worry)
